PTCB Will No Longer Accept ‘In-Service’ Hours for CE Credit Starting January 2018

Beginning January 1, 2018, PTCB no longer accepts what is known as ‘in-service’ continuing education (CE) hours toward fulfillment of PTCB’s 20-hour CE requirement for renewal. In-service CE refers to certain projects or training earned at a CPhT's workplace under a pharmacist's supervision.

The ‘in-service’ CE category will no longer appear as an option in your renewal application form beginning in January 2018. For example, a CPhT with an expiration date of March 31, 2018 will not be able to submit in-service CE hours earned prior to January 1, 2018.

Only a small portion of CPhTs will be affected by this change since more than 95% of renewal applicants never choose to submit ‘in-service’ CE hours on their applications.

PTCB first announced this change in 2013 as part of a series of PTCB Program enhancements to advance pharmacy technician qualifications for renewal. The changes redefine acceptable continuing education in an effort to increase quality and uniformity, and ensure CE hours provide education that is relevant to today’s pharmacy settings.
