CPhT Certification

CPhT Work Experience

Work experience can be completed in various pharmacy settings. All types of pharmacy settings are acceptable as long as the work involves the knowledge outlined in the PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) Knowledge Reference document.

Work experience in pharmacy technician, pharmacy technician trainee and volunteer pharmacy technician roles are acceptable

Attesting to Work Experience

Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) candidates must attest to meeting the required work experience within their application. There is no need to submit a separate form or supervisor signature when applying. However, it is important to note that PTCB reserves the right to audit application information at any time.

Work Experience Timeframe

Before applying for CPhT Certification, candidates must have accumulated a minimum of 500 hours of work experience. Otherwise, there is no specific timeframe for completing these hours.

Reusing Work Experience for Exam Retakes

In the event that a candidate needs to retake an exam, the work experience reported during the initial application can be reused when submitting a new application.

CPhT-Adv Certification

CPhT-Adv Work Experience

Work experience can be completed in various pharmacy settings. All types of pharmacy settings are acceptable as long as the work involves the knowledge outlined in the PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) Knowledge Reference document.

Work experience in pharmacy technician, pharmacy technician trainee and volunteer pharmacy technician roles are acceptable

Work Experience Timeframe

Before applying for CPhT-Adv Certification, candidates must have at least 3 years of work experience as a pharmacy technician within the past 8 years. Hours of experience as a pharmacy technician educator are eligible to fulfill this requirement.

CSPT Certification

CSPT Work Experience

Sterile compounding experience must have been completed in a US facility and subject to USP <797> and <800> regulations. This experience may be earned in part-time or full-time employment, and roles that include, but are not necessarily fully devoted, to sterile compounding.

Attesting to Work Experience

Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician® (CSPT®) candidates must annually attest to meeting the required work experience using the CSPT Competency Attestation Form.

Work Experience Timeframe

Work experience must be within the last 8 years.

Reusing Work Experience for Exam Retakes

In the event that a candidate needs to retake an exam, the work experience reported during the initial application can be reused when submitting a new application as long as it was completed in the timeframe (within 8 years for CSPT).

CPTEd Certification

CPTEd Work Experience

To be eligible for the Certified Pharmacy Technician Educator (CPTEd) Certification, you must meet the work experience of educating, instructing, or training in pharmacy.

Work Experience Timeframe

Work experience must be within the last 3 years. During the application you are required to add your work experience and upload your resume or curriculum vitae (CV)

Reusing Work Experience for Exam Retakes

In the event that a candidate needs to retake an exam, the work experience reported during the initial application can be reused when submitting a new application as long as it was completed in the timeframe (within 3 years for CPTEd).

Billing and Reimbursement Certificate

Billing and Reimbursement Work Experience

To meet the eligibility requirements for the Billing and Reimbursement Certificate, 50% of your pharmacy technician work experience must be devoted to pharmacy billing and reimbursement activities.

Attesting to Work Experience

Billing and Reimbursement Certificate candidates must submit the Supervisor Attestation Form for the PTCB Billing and Reimbursement Certificate Program when applying for the certificate

Before applying for the Billing and Reimbursement Certificate, candidates must have accumulated the required work experience. Otherwise, there is no specific timeframe for completing the required work experience.

Medication History Certificate

Medication History Work Experience

To meet the eligibility requirements for the Medication History Certificate, your work experience must include conducting medication histories and/or similar experiences of patient-focused communication, such as intake of new patients/prescriptions and answering patient questions. 

The intention of the requirement is that pharmacy technicians with full-time work experience in community pharmacies and/or work experience in ambulatory/hospital roles focused on taking medication histories will meet the spirit of the requirement.

Medication History Certificate candidates must submit the Supervisor Attestation Form for the PTCB Medication History Certificate Program when applying for the certificate.

Work Experience Timeframe

Before applying for the Medication History Certificate, candidates must have accumulated the required work experience. Otherwise, there is no specific time frame required for completing the required work experience.

In the event that a candidate needs to retake an exam, the work experience reported during the initial application can be reused when submitting a new application.

Nonsterile Compounding Certificate

Nonsterile Compounding Work Experience

To meet the eligibility requirements for the Nonsterile Compounding Certificate, candidates must have at least 12 months of full-time employment as a pharmacy technician within the past eight (8) years, at least 50% of which must be devoted to independently compounding nonsterile preparations.

Attesting to Work Experience

Nonsterile Compounding Certificate candidates must submit the Supervisor Attestation Form for the PTCB Nonsterile Compounding Certificate Program when applying for the certificate.

Work Experience Timeframe

Before applying for the Nonsterile Compounding Certificate, candidates must have accumulated the required work experience within the past eight (8) years.
